What’s going on at Images Art Gallery?

November 19, 2014

Holiday season is here and like everyone else, Images Art Gallery and its members are keeping busy.

Friday will be a big day in this neighborhood.  In addition to the great events and specials that you can find at many Downtown Overland Park businesses for Third Fridays, it’s also time for the Mayor’s Tree Lighting. Want to sip some hot cocoa, talk to Santa, or take a hayride? Those festivities and more will take place on the clock tower patio from 5:30-7:30PM, with the lighting occurring between 6-6:15PM. Here at the gallery, we will be hosting a reception for the opening of the latest Featured Members Exhibit. This month, artists Jilli Nel and Cyndi West take center stage. Drop by any time from 6-9PM and relax, enjoy the artwork and some refreshments. It may be cold outside, but you’ll get a warm welcome here.

Don’t forget – the Holiday Gift Shop is now open!

Speaking of Jilli Nel, she’s a busy woman. Not only is she one of this month’s featured artists, but she has 2 shows in downtown crossroads, her painting titled “What’s Your Story” was featured on the cover of Evolving Magazine, and MACA has asked her to be the main motivational speaker at their annual conference in Tan-Tar-A. She’s also leading a workshop this weekend at the InterUrban Art House in Overland Park. Seats are limited for the acrylics workshop; for more information, contact her at jillinel.art@gmail.com.

Norma Herring is doing a solo show as part of the ArtsKC “Now Showing” program. Her work will be on display at the DST building downtown (1055 Broadway), October 1 through January 1, 2015. She was also invited to show by the Greater KC Community Foundation, and has several paintings on display in the lower level of Nativity Catholic Church at 119th & Mission, November 10 through December 28. This fall, Norma was juried into the Plein Air Salon online competition for August/September. She also has three prints that will hang in the inaugural Missouri Watercolor Society members’ show in their new gallery space in downtown St. Louis (555 Washington Avenue).

CainFusions is part of “A World of Good” Holiday Sale at From The Summer’s Garden, running each weekend through December 7th. CainFusions will also be at the Bizarre Bazaar at the Lawrence Art Center on November 28th & 29th. More information on these events is available on their websites. John Cain recently took second place for 3D in the Lenexa Artist’s Show for his fused glass piece “Doing the People’s Work.” That piece is now at Images Art Gallery.

Images Art Gallery members have been getting their fair share of awards and recognitions. In October, Bess Duston won a Merit Award in the Missouri Watercolor Member Show. September saw Catherine Kirkland taking Second Place for Photography at the Lenexa Artist’s show with a digitally-altered original painting “Pink Flowers Spring Forest,” which also took an Honorable Mention for Digital Features. Loreta Feeback won a Merit Award in the Prairie Village State of the Arts, while Susan Wilson participated in the Parkville Plein Air event and won Honorable Mention for a painting of the historic railroad depot.

Gallery members can be found in a number of places around town and beyond. Michael Molick regularly hosts First Friday exhibits in his studio/gallery in the Crossroads District (115 W. 18th St, Studio 304). In November, Ric Cummings was featured at Elements of Green opening November 7, and is looking forward to another opening in December. Marla Craven will have a piece published in Voices magazine. And Dawn Thomas, who just had a watercolor in the New Mexico National that ended this month, has had a painting accepted in the Kansas National Watercolor show.

The gallery is looking ahead to 2015, and the planning for the 9th Annual Children’s Art Show International Peace Murals Exhibit is underway. The show is open to all students Pre-K through 8th grade. The opening reception will be held on Friday, February 20, 2015 from 6-9 p.m. The exhibit will run February 20 through March 14, 2015.
